Swine Flu Statement

Spearhead Summer Program 2009 to Continue in Mexico City

After closely monitoring the outbreak of the H1N1 influenza (swine) virus in Mexico City over the past few weeks, both through our personnel in the United States and our long-term personnel in Mexico City, we have decided to continue with the summer program in Mexico City. Officials both in Mexico City and outside of Mexico have noticed positive indications that the virus is waning in Mexico City. Slowly, the city is returning to normal as businesses re-open and children return to school.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has stated that epidemiologists are seeing that this particular strain of the virus (N1H1) is not stronger than the regular seasonal flu. Furthermore, the World Health Organization has issued a statement in which they mention that there is "no rationale for travel restrictions" related to the outbreak of the virus. Although they do recommend that individuals should wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water on a regular basis and seek medical attention if they develop any symptoms.

Our experienced and trained staff in Mexico City is prepared to deal with any health concerns which arise this summer. We will continue to implement measures to insure the health and safety of participants in our program including those mentioned above. In the case of an incident or emergency we will respond immediately. It is important to know that Mexico City has many modern and world class hospitals.

We understand that some may still feel unsure about participating in the summer program and for this reason are more than glad to respond to any additional questions you may have. Feel free to write or call the Spearhead Director, Paul Johnson in Mexico City at info@spearhead.org or at 305-600-2034 (Miami number that transfers to Mexico).

We ask everyone to confirm their participation in the program with LAM's short-term coordinator Jim Jordan at jjordan@lam.org or (305) 884-8400 x 45, as soon as possible. Please notify LAM before May 15th if you intend to cancel.

In the aftermath of this outbreak we believe that this is an opportune moment for the proclamation of the good news of Jesus in Mexico City. We hope you choose to be a part of this.
